Information on Vista Service Pack 1

The Windows Vista SP1 installation clears the prefetch cache and some other user-specific, cached data that is used by Vista for optimal performance. The system and some applications may appear to be less responsive immediately after SP1 has been installed, however the cache is re-stocked for each application when the application is first run; this means that any apparently slow response should only be apparent when an application is first executed after the installation of SP1, not for subsequent executions.

The Group Policy Management Console is uninstalled by Service Pack 1, causing gpedit to default to Local Group Policy editing. Service Pack 1 users wanting to use the management console must download an updated version, which will expose new functionality, including search.

If you are looking for information on how to slipstream Vista SP1, you'll find everything you need at this link.

Prerequisites

In the article titled , Microsoft state that Vista Service Pack 1 has a number of prerequisite updates, and that most users will receive the updates automatically via Windows Update as part of Microsoft's scheduled monthly updates, then Microsoft asserts that the Service Pack installer will install the updates if you don't already have them on your system. So, in short, even though Microsoft say there are prerequisite updates, there aren't really any prerequisite updates because the service pack installer will install them anyway.

  Mind boggling.

Hardware Support Enhancements

Adds support to give 64-bit systems functional parity with legacy BIOS firmware to let Vista install to GPT formatted disks, and boot and resume from hibernate using UEFI firmware.

Adds support for x64 EFI network boot.

Support for the 64-bit version of MSDASQL bridge between OLEDB and ODBC drivers.

Adds support for Direct3D® 10.1 to take advantage of new hardware features

Adds support for the exFAT file system, which supports large capacity and large files in flash memory storage devices.

Adds support for SD Advanced DMA (ADMA) on compliant SD standard host controllers to improve transfer performance and decrease CPU use.

Adds support for creating a boot DVD that boots on PCs with BIOS or EFI.

Adds new icons and labels to identify HD-DVD and Blu-ray Drives as high density drives.

Adds support for new Windows Media Center Extenders to connect to Windows Media Center PCs to digital televisions and networked DVD players

Modified MPEG-2 decoder support for content protection faster hardware decoder acceleration for commercial DVD playback on some hardware.

Enhanced Projector to better accommodate custom projector resolutions when connecting to Windows Network Projectors.

Application Compatibility

Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista contains all compatibility updates from the

The appears to contain only the July 2007 update plus blocking added for four applications, along with functionality changes to IE7. Microsoft's documentation for Vista SP1 only says that the July 2007 updates are included, plus "additional application compatibility fixes for individual applications." It is not known if the four blocked applications in the December update are the same "individual applications" referred to in the SP1 release documents.

The list of applications affected by compatibility updates is far too large to list here, but you can follow this link for a full list.

Reliability

SP1 addresses many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs that have been reported through Windows Error Reporting. Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player and a number of drivers being the most notable causes of problems.

Fixes are also included for:
  • Data-loss when ejecting NTFS-formatted removable-media
  • IPSec connections over IPv6
  • Drivers going to sleep with incomplete packet transmissions
  • Computer-to-computer wireless connections
  • Peer-to-peer connections, in particular Remote Assistance, amongst others
  • File backup now backs up EFS-encrypted files
  • Recovery environment changes, specifically the Startup Repair Tool can now repair unbootable disks if certain OS files are missing
  • An "improvement" to nag again all those users who opted out of the initial nag to join the Customer Experience Improvement Program

Performance and Power Consumption

Vista SP1 includes numerous performance improvements, however only limited data is available on the scale of the improvements:
  • Browsing network file shares consumes less bandwidth
  • Processor is allowed to remain in a sleep state if the display is not changing
  • Changes to video interrupt management to allow a system to stay asleep
  • Hard disks can now spin down instead of continuing to spin in some circumstances
  • Improved compressed folder compression and file extraction
  • Speed of moving a directory with many files has been significantly improved

    • Never mind that many copy operations are finished before the progress estimate is ready
  • 50% speed improvement when reading "large images"
  • Improved JavaScript performance in IE7
  • Long delays (up to 5 minutes) in boot time with ReadyDrive-capable hard drives have been addressed
  • The ReadyBoost cache, Superfetch™ and some classes of USB hub have been enhanced to allow faster resumption from sleep and standby states
  • Slightly improved shutdown time with syncing to mobile devices
  • Improved network connection time in multi-connect scenarios
  • Changes to the Enterprise edition for a better user experience at logon
  • Photo Screensaver enhancements to return to the user environment faster
  • Improved "overall media performance by reducing many glitches"
  • Administrators can modify the balance between performance and audio/video playback quality of the Multimedia Class Scheduling Service
  • 25%-60% traffic improvement in compression for Remote Desktop
  • Improved performance in some printer drivers

Security

Windows Vista SP1 includes all previously released Security Bulletin fixes that applied Windows Vista, however the date of the last included security fix is unknown, therefore any security fixes released between SP1 being frozen/released to manufacturing and the service pack being made available to the public cannot be accurately determined.

According to Microsoft documentation, "SP1 includes Secure Development Lifecycle process updates, where Microsoft identifies the root cause of each security bulletin and improves our internal tools to eliminate code patterns that could lead to future vulnerabilities." Microsoft do not mention how they obtain this information from your system.

The 64-bit Kernel Patch Protection API has been improved to support third-party security and malicious software detection applications.

Remote Desktop files can be signed by administrators for RemoteApp™ programs and desktops.

Users can select a default desktop search application in a similar manner to setting a third-party web browser search provider.

Vista now reports the amount of system memory installed instead of the amount of system memory available to the OS. A system equipped with 4GB of RAM will report all 4GB, however this improvement requires a compatible BIOS.

User Account Control (UAC) now only nags once when a user is creating or renaming folders in protected locations, which reduces the number of nags from four.

Some improvements to the information available in help text.

The Vista scanner now opens Explorer instead of the Windows Photo Gallery when a new image is scanned.

Password hints are now mandatory. This change was made because too many people were forgetting their passwords and had no access to the system due to the Administrator account being disabled by default.
